A popular area with neighbourhoods offering a variety of price ranges for families, Nashwaaksis offers schools and amenities, along with convenient access to the Westmorland Bridge.
A large portion of Nashwaaksis is referred to as Fulton Heights, with homes built as early as the 1950s and into the 2000s. Additionally, a number of popular subdivisions are located near this area: Brookside West, West Hills and Sunset Acres.
Geographically, the area is largely encompassed between Main Street, lower Brookside Drive, and Ring Road.
Like many communities in Fredericton’s, the extensive trail system is easily accessible. Definitely a fantastic opportunity for cycling, walking the dog, and exploring the city! The trail system runs through the Nashwaaksis Stream Nature Park, a 25 hectare parkland that a wide variety of flora and fauna call home. Furthermore, the Nashwaaksis Stream (not to be confused with the larger Nashwaak River) is situated between Main Street and Sunset Drive, offering beautiful wetlands and opportunities for kayaking or canoeing. It connects directly to the Wolastoq River.
Indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities galore
Active community members also appreciate the proximity to green spaces. Fulton Heights hosts parks, soccer fields, basketball courts, pickleball courts, disc golf course, and a wading pool! For those who prefer the indoors, the Fredericton Public Library (northside location) and Fredericton Indoor Pool are also in Nashwaaksis. Nearby, the Willie O’Ree Sports Complex, named in honour of the first black NHL player, offers a vast array of activities. This state of the art facility features 2 NHL-sized ice rinks, multiple dressing rooms, an indoor walking track, a YMCA Wellness Centre, an indoor skate park, and so much more.
Additionally, several of these amenities are situated around the neighbourhood’s schools: Park Street Elementary, Nashwaaksis Memorial Elementary, and Nashwaaksis Middle. These schools are centrally located in the Fulton Heights neighbourhood, allowing for easy drop-off and pick-up. Many families are even able to walk to school! The community also hosts several daycare and afterschool centres.
For the history buffs: Nashwaaksis is situated on the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The village was incorporated in 1966, then amalgamated with the city of Fredericton in 1973.
This northside neighbourhood has remained popular over the years, with its desirable schools and convenient location! Overall, families of all ages can call it “home sweet home!”
